PDR vs. Conventional Repairs – What is the difference?

With the summer storm season approaching, we thought it was a good time to go over some of the differences between paintless dent repair (PDR) and conventional auto body repair methods. While a specific dent looks like it could just be “pulled out” that may not actually be the case. The easiest way to assess damage is always to bring the vehicle in for a free estimate at any of our 6 locations. What is paintless dent repair?

Paintless dent repair (PDR) is a technique used to remove minor dents and dings without affecting the original paint finish of the vehicle.

How it works:
Technicians use specialized tools to gently massage and reshape the metal from behind the panel or by using glue tabs on the outside, restoring the panel to its original shape without having to prep, match colors and painting. Keep in mind, this method can only be used if the paint around or in the dent(s) is not cracked or chipped.

Best for:

  • Small to medium-sized dents

  • Hail damage

  • Door dings

Pros:

  • Preserves original paint (no color mismatch)

  • Lower cost than conventional repair

  • Faster turnaround

Cons:

  • Not suitable for deep dents, paint damage, or sharp creases

What is conventional auto body repair?

Traditional repair methods involves filling, sanding, and repainting the damaged area to restore the panel’s appearance.

How it works:
Technicians pull out the dent as much as possible, then use body filler to smooth the area. After sanding, they apply primer, paint, and clear coat, blending it with surrounding panels.

Best for:

  • Major dents or collision damage

  • Dents with scratched, chipped, or cracked paint

  • Damage on panel edges or structural areas

Pros:

  • Can handle severe damage

  • Restores full cosmetic and structural integrity

Cons:

  • More expensive

  • Longer repair time

  • Paint match may not always be perfect
