How does a frame straightening rack work?

Lots of equipment in an auto body shop is critical to proper repairs, one of the most important is the frame rack. Typical auto body shops can do light frame straightening after an accident but some shops will specialize in heavy hits and larger frame repairs if required.

Generally speaking, the repair process using a frame rack is as follows:

• Vehicle Assessment & Mounting – technicians inspect the damage and secure the vehicle to the rack using clamps and chains.

• Measurement – the frame is measured to determine which sections are out of alignment, using a blueprint or factory spec sheet.

• Pulling the Frame:

  • The hydraulic towers are positioned near the damaged areas.

  • Controlled pulling force is applied gradually using the hydraulic system.

  • This is often done from multiple angles to reverse the damage.

• Heat & Realignment (if needed):

  • Some repairs may involve localized heating to relieve metal stress.

  • The goal is to bring the frame back within acceptable tolerances.

• Re-Measurement – After pulling, measurements are taken again to verify accuracy, fine adjustments are made as needed.

• Final Checks & Repair:

  • Once the frame is aligned, additional structural and cosmetic repairs follow.

  • Suspension, drivetrain, and body panels may be reinstalled or realigned.
